The Heavy Duty Acrow Props is a simple but innovative construction device that provides temporary and adjustable vertical load bearing support. Heavy Duty Acrow Props, also known as Acrow jacks, shore stanchions or shore back stanchions, are commonly used for support during building repairs – such as supporting beams, doors and window frames when making renovations.
Originally conceived in 1935 by Swiss-born inventor Willem de Virgil, the original Heavy Duty Acrow Props were designed to replace bespoke wooden pillars and scaffolding with a more cost-effective and flexible form of temporary building support. Today, Heavy Duty Acrow Props are considered an important tool of the trade and can be found on construction sites around the world.
Heavy Duty Acrow Props come in a variety of designs, but most include:
Two lengths of adjustable high-strength telescopic steel tubes – including an inner tube with a welded top plate and an outer tube with a welded bottom plate;
And a pin mechanism that locks these tubes in place when the desired length is reached.
Removing the pin that locks the tube in place allows a rough adjustment of the length, and then replaces the pin to lock the tube in place again. Finer adjustments are then made using external threads that wrap around the tube being used.
The alternative Heavy Duty Acrow Props design replaces the sliding portion of the tube with two threaded tubes that screw into each other. And a clamping or ratchet system can be used in place of the pin mechanism.
